Caledonian Canal

The Caledonian Canal
While we were in Aberdeen, the Stonehaven Yacht Club organised the a trip down the Caledonian Canal in the Sail Training yacht Winston Churchill. I was sea sick for a day and a half but had recovered by the time we got to Inverness. We went over the tidal bore and down the loch, without seeing Nessie, and into the canal. The engine gave out half way down, or maybe up, Neptunes Staircase and we sat for a day or so waiting for a spare part before we could get down to Fort William. Lovely scenery, of course, but it limited the sailing on the West Coast, the best cruising water in the world, as far as I’m concerned. On the way back we had to run for home under threat of a developing Storm – Force Ten. Fun? You betcha!
