I’ve seen it!

So football (soccer) is with us this week-end and we can welcome the commentators back to our screens, a joy, if like me, you’d have gone to a match with friends who share the enjoyment but say very little during the match, only commenting at half time, or when it’s all over. I’ll enjoy having the commentators, I mean, who doesn’t enjoy watching the winger move outside, cut inside, float in a cross, which is, unfortunately, just too high for the striker and he heads it over the bar. As they prepare to restart, that enjoyment is doubled by the commentator saying, the winger moved outside, cut inside, floated in a cross, but it was, unfortunately, just too high for the striker and he headed it over the bar. To add to the delight, at half time, or a major hiatus in the game, you get reminded,  the winger moved outside, cut inside, floated in a cross, which was, unfortunately, just too high for the striker and he headed over the bar. There’s more to come, because, when the pundits go over things afterwards, you will be glad to hear, the winger moved outside, cut inside, floated in a cross, which was, unfortunately, just too high for the striker and he headed it over the bar.

The really amazing thing is that the training the commentators undergo is so thorough it has allowed them to bring this skill to the Olympics, where you can hear – the high-jumper has just … or the boxer landed a right …

Of course, if I didn’t enjoy the chat, I could turn off the sound, watch the games in peace and only turn the voice-over on when something happened I wasn’t sure about – as I’d be forced to do if I’d gone to watch with a friend.
