Pot Holes, Burns and Bible Study – I found the following, written in the late 18th century, while researching for Burns’ night and thought it still applicable.
“I’ve arrived – thanks to the gods,
Through pathways rough and muddy,
A certain sign that makin’ roads,
Is not this people’s study.
Yet though I’m not with scripture crammed,
I’m sure the Bible says,
That heedless sinners shall be damned,
Who do not mend their ways.”
