Winners

I don’t understand all this business of not having winners at school. The only way I ever had a chance to qualify for university was being in competition with my cousin. It’s fine to talk of competing with yourself but it’s an awful lot easier to compete against Jimmy next door. I don’t want my next book to be better than Drover, or King or Kaiser, I want it to be better than Bernard Cornwell or Wilbur Smith. I always thought that was what the American Dream and the Scottish dream was about, being better than the English. I suppose that puts me among the dinosaurs. One thing’s for sure, if you don’t like competition, you wont like the next book, Flower Show, when it comes out.
