A hot potato

A friend I met in Africa who had been in Zimbabwe when it was a British colony. When their little settlement was visited by the British Commissioner, who exemplified the ideas and manners of good society, they naturally held a dinner party. The dinner guests were, of course, on their best behaviour, making sure they watched which spoon the commissioner used for the soup etc. When the entrée was served the commissioner put a potato into his mouth, found it was too hot and spat it back out. He looked round the company and quipped, ‘Some bloody fool would have tried to eat that.’
